Imagine Barrington sidewalks aglow with luminaries for the holidays.

The Friends of the Bay Spring Community Center (BSCC) have that vision. They hope to start that tradition here on Dec. 1.

"We'll be selling luminary kits at the Festival of Lights," said Kim Fournier of the BSCC. "We want people to take them home and start lighting them that night."

Fournier also wants people to light a single luminary at the festival itself to add some additional glow to the festivities.

"We'll have a table with some crayons or markers," she said. "Children can write holiday wishes on the bags or remember a loved one."

Proceeds from the sale of the luminary kits will be used to help pay for the restoration of the building on Narragansett Avenue and, perhaps, support musical programs and events, she said.

"We wanted to be part of the Festival of Lights to raise awareness of the community center while also hoping to start a tradition and watch it grow," she said.

Many other cities and towns in New England have luminaria traditions, including Needham, Mass., and New Haven, Conn. See the video of New Haven above.

Each kit sold at the festival will have 5 luminaries, complete with bags, tea lights and sand, Fournier said. A minimum donation of $10 will be requested.

In many towns, neighborhoods get together to light luminaries on the same night. Or a town or city holds a luminaria night.

Imagine that tradition in Barrington. The Friends of the BSCC do.
